“Facebook Business Pages are for businesses, brands, and organizations to share their stories and connect with people” - Facebook ™
Did you know that the average person is on Facebook 15 hours and 33 minutes per month? Millions of people (699 million) log into Facebook daily. Are you tapping into this opportunity to reach both male and female consumers? If not, you should be.
I just spent the past 30 days giving my Business page a facelift and experimenting with Ads and Post types. Although my results aren’t as exciting as PostPlanner’s (3000% increase), I’m satisfied with the regularity of engagement and reach, for now.
Not wanting to give up on your Business Fan page yet? Follow along as I share how I updated my page to better serve my fans and increase clicks to my Website (or Mailing List).
This is a LONG (5,000+ words) Post, so for your convenience, I’ve broken it up into sections. Click on the ones that interest you the most. PIN IT FOR LATER.

What is a Facebook Business Page?
Just like your private profile you can customize the page, publish stories, host events, and add applications. BUT, you also have access to insights (Facebook’s analytics), a customizable call to action button, the option of adding your online shop (Shopify), and more.
When People like your Page (post) your updates show up in their News Feed as well as their friends News Feed. Can you see the potential reach this offers?
Yes, I know organic reach is minimal nowadays, like 1 view per 1,000 fans or so it seems, but, there are ways around this. Come along, grab a pen and paper OR open up your notepad and let’s get busy. I recommend acting on one step each day.
Building traffic with Facebook can be fun but does require some planning and implementing. By implementing each of the 30-steps and consistently building your page with relevant content you will be on your way to an effective lead generating Facebook page.
Step 1: Fill out your business Profile
The first step in making your small business or blog visible on Facebook is with a Business Page. You’ll need a separate page from your personal profile. You’ll also need to add content like your brand name, URL, and logo.
Important: Consider this before converting your personal profile to a page, it can only be done once. This means you will have a personal profile and a separate page. If you don’t want a page, choose to allow followers to your personal profile. This way fans can follow your publicly posted information. You won’t be able to take advantage of features like advertising, call to action button, etc. without a page.
Read: How are Pages different from personal profiles? and Your Business Should Be On Facebook, Here’s Why
Here’s what many businesses miss:
Your Business Page is NOT for selling. It’s to tell your story, announce events, and share business updates. Facebook Advertising is for getting attention for your special event, fundraiser, or lead generation.
Social Media Examiner shows how to properly promote an event on Facebook and Andy Reid shares How to Promote an Event Without Annoying People. It’s a bit outdated [circa 2010], but the core is good.
Facebook is doing a lot to accommodate businesses, but their number one priority is to the user thus the decrease in promotional material in feeds.
Let’s get started:
Go to Facebook.com/pages/create
Select a more specific category from the drop-down menu and fill out your information
- Local business or place (brick and mortar) doctor, lawyer, bookstore, grocery store, hotel, hospital, etc.
- Company, organization or institution - health and beauty, hospital, aerospace, medical company, school, university, etc.
- Brand or product - food, game, app, clothing brand, office supplies, website, pet supplies, cause
- Artist band or public figure [author, blogger, chef, coach, entrepreneur, teacher, writer, model, actor, speaker, politician etc.]
- Entertainment - book series, magazine, fictional character, podcast, radio station, etc.
- Cause or community (fan page)
Click GET STARTED and follow the instructions on the screen

Once your page is all set up, go back to your personal page and update your About section.
Click on INTRO (pencil) in left corner and add a short introduction about you
Click on Work (pencil) add your Facebook page as your employer
Note: although you can add your work (Facebook page) you can not represent your business via your personal profile. This must be done on your page only (even your “name” page).
Be sure to like your page and invite your friends and current customers too. Your posts should explain why the content is useful to your customers. Also include your brand’s logo, name, or URL on the image.
I’m so excited, I just launched my business page for my company. You’ll want to like it and add me to your feed notifications for when I update the shop with new designs.
Bonus Tip: Add interest lists to separate your customer posts from your personal posts on your personal profile feed. You could unfriend all your customers but this way, you still have a bit of access to them.

Step 2: Add a Facebook Like Button to Your Website
A plugin can increase referral traffic back to your site. Your blog articles are shared with your readers, their friends and followers when you have a “like” button on your blog posts.
Add the Facebook like button by logging into Facebook and then into your business page.
Click on the Link Button Configurator tab, add the URL of your business page, select type of button (with or without counter) then the Blue “Get Code” Button tab.
For those who use WordPress, there are plugins you can use as well. Perform a search for WordPress plugins that add the Facebook like or share button for blog posts to your website. I use SumoMe Sharer plugin on this site.

Keep it simple.
Clear, clean product images on white or light gray background work well. If you are adding images of your physical products, use either a natural environment or on a person (happy smiling women convert better).

Have a specific goal in mind.
Before you post a single image or share a single post, decide what you want to focus on this year.
Are you looking for more sales or traffic?
Is the goal to have more engagement or more followers?
You can use Facebook for all of these things, but you want to focus on what’s most important to your business growth at this moment.

Step 5: Share Specific and Appropriate Posts Using Curated Content
In addition to sharing your own content, you need to share specifically curated content. The content should be relevant to your brand and what your goals are. So, for example, if you have a fashion blog focusing on dresses, your curated content might include styles, colors, cuts, seasonal, length, special occasions, inspiration, etc. This content will show up in the search when visitors are looking for specific terms.

Step 6: Share a Blog Post And Pin It To The Top Of Your Page
How to pin a post a tutorial on Facebook.
Share one of your top performing blog articles. Fans can easily click to your blog posts if you hook them in with the reason they should read it.
The Hook needs to be compelling. So, let’s say you have an Etsy store and your blog is about doing DIY crafts, your Hook will be something like “Her Piano Broke. When I Saw What She Did With It - I MUST Have This in My Home”.
Use keywords in your Hook to help it show up in search engines, as well, BUT don’t ‘keyword stuff’.
Each time you write a blog post, share it on your Business Page. Always include a short summary or quote from the post, an image that represents the post, and a link back to your blog article.

Step 7: Create A Daily Posting Routine
While you’re building your Facebook business page, you need to share something every day.
People will like, share, react, and comment on your stuff. Facebook is all about reach and engagement.
Set up a schedule of 10-25 minutes a day to add new content to your page.
Try this 18 minutes a day routine shared on the Hootsuite blog or start with 5 minutes a day then work your way up.
2 posts a day is a good goal to start. It doesn’t have to be all your content. Share relevant images, videos, animated gifs, and quotes from relevant sources.
->>INSTANT DOWNLOAD ->>SIMPLE 2 POST SCHEDULE
One good thing about sharing other people’s content is the fact that they will receive a notification that you shared their stuff. When they do, they will check out your page and may begin following you as well sharing your stuff, spreading your content among their fans, family, and friends.

Step 8: Make Your Business Easy To Find
You want to make sure your page is actually searchable on Facebook. They are indexed within the Facebook site as well as on search engines. You want the search engines to find you.
You’ll want to make sure Country is set to everyone, Age is set to everyone, and Visibility is set to published.

Step 9: Add A Call To Action To All Posts
You’re probably already using these same techniques in all your other powerful marketing strategies. You add a call to action in your blog posts and on your other social media marketing campaigns. The same should be done for your Facebook posts and page too.
To set the call to action button (CTA) on your page, click the CTA button and select “edit call to action”. You can choose the type of button (Call Now, Book Now, Shop Now, etc.). Test the button.
Include a call to action (CTA) in the caption area of your images or other content.
Link the CTA to an ongoing campaign or to your autoresponder landing page to get referral traffic. You can add the CTA to the actual image as well.
Go through all your images, videos, and posts and make sure there is a CTA on all of them.

Step 10: Post A Teaser Image Or Video For One Of Your Blog Posts
People are thirsty for learning. They love to share and store helpful information. No matter what niche you’re in or whether you’re a blogger, product or service-based business, you should be sharing tutorials and helpful information your followers can use.
Use teaser posts to intrigue people and to get them to click through. A teaser post can be as simple as a bit of text on top of an image or colorful background with a teaser headline. For example, “How to Take Better Photographs” or “The 5 Things You Should Always Keep in Your Craft Supplies”.
Example Teaser Headlines That Leave You Wanting More:

Step 11: Be The First To Share Your Blog Post On Facebook
Start the sharing process first. Share your blog post directly to Facebook from your website, copy the URL, and share it on Google+ and Twitter.
Sharing your blog post can be done easily if you add the Share buttons to your blog or use a plugin. Choose whether you want to share it in a group, on your page, or on your personal profile. In the post, have a caption that hooks the reader to click through to your post for more.
When you share your article first you are getting your post out there in front of your followers who will begin sharing it.

Step 12: Write Compelling Descriptions
Just like a well-written post will get shared, a compelling description can help you get found by people searching for good content. Your descriptions should be accomplishing a particular goal with specific details about the content being shared. It can include keywords but don’t stuff it with them.
Hashtags aren’t needed but if you want to add a few you can. This is especially helpful to connect with your community. Example: #sweetteasocial is a community hashtag that Heather Heuman uses to unite all social mentions of her and her fans.
Here are some ideas on what makes good content descriptions:
- Recipes: Describe the main ingredients and how to cook it.
- Fashion: Tell what kind of clothing it is, the designer or season it should be worn.
- Travel: Give the location and what kinds of things can be done there.
- DIY: Describe what it is, how to make it or what materials are needed.
- Photography: Name who the photographer is, the year it was taken, and the subject.
- Design: Mention the designer, medium, publication, etc.

Step 14: Browse Other Pages For Inspiration

Look at the other stuff someone who is sharing your posts has on their page.
This can give you insight on what the latest trends are, enable you to learn what your typical customer is interested in, and spark your creative imagination for new ideas for a marketing campaign.
Here’s How to WATCH PAGES:
1. Click on INSIGHTS (on your Facebook Business Page)
2. Scroll down to PAGES TO WATCH and ADD PAGES to watch
3. Click on a Page (ex. Brendon Burchard) to see the latest top posts for that page. Pay attention to how many comments, shares, and likes/reactions the post received. Share similar posts to your Business page to see how your audience reacts.

Step 15: Host A Contest On Facebook For More Traffic
People love contests. Drive traffic to your blog with interactive content. Run a contest on your blog and then share it to your Business Facebook page. This type of contest drives traffic to your website.
Another way to increase traffic is to host Contests and Sweepstakes, Photo contests, and Instant Win giveaways.
Host a contest where fans leave a comment for an entry. Or search out how others like Sony, Land’s End or Jetsetter are using contests.
The main point is to get other people to share your posts that are promoting your site, a landing page or even a specific offer.

Facebook Messages is similar to the messaging or chat options found on other social platforms. With Messages, you can contact a visitor directly on Facebook or send them a message directly to their email address. The only thing is they have to be following your page or be a friend on your personal profile.
This is a great tool for sharing content directly with another page. You can engage them in a conversation through Messages instead of having to use comments on individual posts.

Step 17: Invite Collaboration With Other Pages
Collaborate with other pages to grow fans and curate posts. Look for pages who follow your page who are already established and have a good number of fans and posts. Active pages help bring traffic your way when you partner with them.
Message these pages and introduce yourself. Let them know the types of content you’d like them to help you with. Include examples of posts from your page so they have a good idea if you are a good fit for them as well.
Be casual but professional, making your offer clear.
Start by finding 5 different pages to contact about collaborating.
Sample Script:

Facebook is a visual social site. Great visuals are what entices users to click through. Facebook is filled with appealing images and videos. You want to stand out so you can capture the attention of Facebook visitors. You want them to click through to your website once they find your images.
Your images need to be in focus, relevant to your page and easily shared. A shareable image needs to be eye-catching. It can be a picture or a graphic with a headline in an easy to read font. Be sure to add a watermark with your business name or domain name on the image, as well.

Inspire your audience with the lifestyle your product or blog encourages.
Don’t just sell to your audience. Create posts around lifestyle themes that include your products. You want to sell the lifestyle. For example, create a post that’s called “For the Home” instead of “XYZ Furniture”. Include not only your products but also curated content from others that show the lifestyle you are promoting.

Step 24: Send One Post To Your Mailing List
Use your email auto-responder tool to invite every new newsletter subscriber you get to follow you on Facebook. Explain why they should follow your page. For example, you might have a landing page called “special deals” that only your Facebook followers have access to.
A great example of this is this Valentine’s Recipe Page Creations by Dru. She makes Facebook pages, designs Facebook headers, and creates pages for contests and giveaways.
Since this is a holiday specific page, she can share it with her newsletter to invite them to her Holiday List by downloading the recipe book.
- She brings her newsletter subscribers to her Facebook page.
- When they download the book, they are added to this holiday list. This helps her cater her content specifically to them.
- She can collaborate with another Facebook Page and use this page as a landing page.

Step 25: Rebuild Broken Links To All Posts
There’s nothing worse than clicking through to a post only to find a broken link. Make sure all the click-through links works on all your posts. For example, if you’ve deleted a product page or no longer offer a product, make sure you remove those links and update with a good link that is useful.
Sharing other’s content is nice but sometimes that content no longer goes to the intended page. Go ahead and delete these posts.

Wow, there’s tons of content here! I must admit to shifting my focus away from my Facebook page since the reach dropped through the floor. I did a few experiments first though, and my impression was that you can still do great things with Facebook pages but you need to be very strategic and be prepared to spend some money on ads. But I have heard of people who are still doing really well with them.
Hi, Helen. Yes, it is quite a post. It took me a little over a month to put this one together. Social media, especially Facebook, is now being played with the dollar. In order to be seen, you must invest cash. We are so overloaded with information each day, it’s no wonder we are blind to all the advertising.
I love these different challenges! Some of these I have already tackled but some I haven’t so I will be going through and seeing how I can improve
Charlotte, thank you for stopping in. Challenges are great especially when done with friends. Do let me know if any of these work for you.
What an informative and helpful post Sara. Thanks for taking the time to write this and I will definitely be working through the 27 steps - so many but I’m sure it will be worth it.
Hi, Sue. Yes, a lot of great information. When I ran this challenge I did each task. It’s probably about time I updated my page.
If you take it one day at a time or even one week at a time, you’ll be able to work through all 30 tasks.
oops there were more than 27 - wow! A great post Sara
That’s okay. ^_^
Sara this is an awesome post. There are some things here I didn’t know. I will add to pinterest so I can refer back to it!
Hi, Michele. Yes, so much to do to build a great Facebook Page. The most important thing to note about growing a community using Facebook Business Pages is that you need to do the work. As you know, Facebook’s organic reach is non-existent. This means you need to get creative and put in some sweat equity.
Here’s what I suggest:
1. Include your most popular post in your newsletter
2. Encourage comments by including the FB post in your email to your readers
3. Share your FB page (building community) in your autoresponder Welcome series.
4. Actually, welcome new fans. Visit them, Message them.
5. Highlight your top interactor each week.
These are just a few active ways to build your community.
