Taking Care of You
The day is finally here. you shout adios amigos to your staff never to return to the corporate grind again.
You finally made the leap into entrepreneurship and you’re flying high on endorphins.
You’re pretty darn proud of yourself. (go on, pat yourself on the back)
You feel lighter as though the world was lifted off your shoulders.
You can breathe deeply.
You grin as though you are the sole owner of the key to the last known cupcake in the world. Cupcakes…
You wake the next morning, sunshine in your eyes and put on your robe (you giggle because you’re working in your pajamas) and walk to the kitchen with a spring in your step to pour yourself a nice fresh squeezed glass of orange juice.
Satisfied, you sigh deeply.
You commute to your home office (you giggle again because you now have a home office) after pouring hot coffee in your “I’m The Boss” mug. (you giggle again)
You take your contact list and get to work right away.
2-hours later you feel accomplished because you zipped through your entire to-do list with 6-hours to spare.
Ha, this working from home stuff is super simple you think to yourself.
What do you do now?
A long soak in the bath sounds perfect.
6-months later and Back to Reality…
You’re running around trying to find the post-it note with the number of the contact your client gave you during your last phone conversation.
“I miss my secretary”, the thought floats around taunting you.
There it is! you shout.
Of course, it’s on the bottom of your “I’m The Boss” mug that used to bring you so much joy. You roll your eyes.
You make the phone call only to be put on perpetual hold.
When you finally reach someone, you’re told that Mr. X is not in the office today.
You scream slamming the phone down on the dock.
Breathe, you tell yourself.
Shame and guilt kick in as you ruminate on how unprofessional you were to the receptionist.
What’s gotten into you?
You’re a hot mess with scraggly hair, slippers, leggings and a t-shirt.
What’s that smell? Oh, it’s you.
When was the last time you took a nice soak in the tub?
This is NOT what you signed up for.
Can you relate?
Many freelancers can relate because frankly, even if life is a bed of roses, roses have thorns and darn it, they hurt.
The realities of working from home hit all of us as the dream bubble bursts.
BUT, it does get better.
Working, whether in a sky rise building or your cutely decorated home office is still working.
You may enjoy your work (your core work) but it still takes dedication, perseverance, and sass (grit).
Just like in the corporate world you’ll feel the time crunch as deadlines approach.
You’ll feel fatigue as you once again type the same email over again because somehow you deleted the 3 before.
Respect for your secretary arises as you envision the halo above her head. How did she do it all?
You’ll feel incompetent, lost, overwhelmed, stressed, and like you’ve lost a few hundred brain cells.
Believe me, I’ve been there (like yesterday).
Seriously though, you’re a pretty awesome cookie. Really, you are!
You flew the coup.
You set out on your own path to move your dreams from your head into reality.
That’s Awesome, don’t you think?
Here’s some truth for you…
Even though you’re a pretty awesome cookie, you still need to take care of yourself.
You need to shower or soak in a nice warm tub with a LUSH bath bomb.
You need to eat healthy foods, not just breakfast bars and coffee.
You left that life when you left the corporate world, remember?
You’re run down because you’re doing too much.
You’re doing things you don’t need to do or even want to do.
You’re only being stubborn because you think that’s what it means to be the boss.
Being Boss, means you’re in charge.
You’re the leader.
You call the shots.
If you don’t want to write emails, don’t.
If you don’t want to reconcile the books, don’t.
If you’d much rather give your undivided attention to your client without having a million tasks from your to-do list floating around your head, do it.
There is absolutely nothing stopping you.
By the way, in case you don’t know it, you don’t have to run your business like everyone else. You’re the Boss, remember?
Stop being foolish and get out of those leggings and into something that shouts I Am Boss I Am Beautiful I Am Powerful.
Oh, but I think you should shower first. 😉
Now, consider hiring someone to help you manage your emails, calendar, and phone calls. Next, hire a bookkeeper, you deserve it.
Once you have the help you need you won’t feel so run-down.
You’ll have extra time to take care of you.
You know yourself best so why do you neglect you?
