A blog content refresh is needed for a number of reasons. But before I get into them I’d like to share a story.
Yesterday I was on top of the roof clearing branches, limbs, and tree stumps from a dead tree. Last week the neighbor was trying to tame the tree and the entire left side fell. The awning is destroyed, the fence is destroyed, and stress levels were at an all-time high for both homeowners.
An hour into my daredevil antics of gravity defying roof aerobatics a couple of guys came along. One on a bike, another on a scooter. They parked their transportation on the front lawn and asked if I needed some help.
YES! (I was shouting on the inside)
My first thought was “Oh, no. they want money and I don’t have any.” My second thought was “I don’t think my parents home insurance will cover a stranger on the roof.”
Being a persistent Samaritan he continued to nudge me into the acceptance of his offer for help. I gave in.
Within 30-minutes this guy had everything down on the ground – the big logs, all the little branches, and he even cleared the gutters.
Now, for the descent. (no photo needed)
How did this 300+ (and shrinking – really ^_^) middle-aged gal get on top of the roof with achy knees and painful joints? A ladder and sheer willingness to help my parents out of this predicament.
Red faced and apologizing as he held the ladder for me I made my way down safely.
If I was younger, I probably would have been super embarrassed as my large behind slowly got closer to his view with each step down the ladder – I chose this day to wear shorts (eyes rolling). But, I’m old, married over 25 years and although a tinge apologetic, didn’t think much of it – until later.
Why do you need a blog content refresh?
Content gets old.
It needs to be cleared or at least cleaned up a bit so it can be used properly.
And if you’ve been blogging for longer than 5 years, your content needs a bit of sprucing up.
A nice clean bath, some lovely smelling essential oils, and a nice bow that shouts “look at me aren’t I pretty?”
Inside you’ll learn:
- How an efficient blog content refresh can increase your traffic, social shares, subscribers, and income
Although cleaning up old blog posts isn’t a complete content audit, it is the first step. Eventually, you should schedule quarterly content audits to verify that your fiscal goals are on target. Is your content getting sales and leads?
According to Aweber, a content audit is…
“a quantitative inventory of your content combined with a qualitative assessment of how your content is performing.
“It’s more than just creating a list of all the pages, blog posts, photos, documents and videos you have on your website. Yes, making a list is part of the process. But, more importantly, it’s assessing how your content is performing, which helps you know what to keep doing, what to improve, and what to scrap.(1)

How Can a Blog Content Refresh Increase Traffic?
Before updating any old blog post, you want to see which content is doing well. Traffic is one of the main focuses for generating new leads so you want to start by checking your Google Analytics (or other blog statistics).
Once you identify a post that is doing well, critique it. If it still matches your business focus, keep it.
Now, spruce that baby up and relaunch it into the world.
Really launch it.
Set a page view goal, a click-through goal, a social sharing goal, and an income goal.
The benefits of a good sprucing up are:
- New signals to Google (hey, look here, my blog post just got a makeover)
- New information, statistics, or additional explanations to really make this piece a strong pillar
- New eyeballs via social media (think Pinterest) and email subscribers who weren’t part of your list “back in the day”
How Can a Blog Content Refresh Increase Social Shares?
Why care about social shares? It’s all about the cred.
Yes, research shows(2) that before sharing something we first think about ourselves BUT more importantly, we think about what others think about what we share. (It’s okay, you can reread that last part.)
The benefits of a focused social sharing campaign:
- By kick-starting your social shares, you build cred with new readers as well as with your current readers (or customers).
- Updating your old blog posts can also help you identify what content is meeting the needs of your audience and which are falling flat.
TIP: Test headlines, call to actions, and images on social media to see which gets the most shares.Test headlines, call to actions, and images on social media to see which gets the most shares.Click To Tweet
How Can a Blog Content Refresh Increase Subscribers?
Remember my story about the dead tree? Your blog content can also rot and die. An upgrade can increase subscribers (aka prospects) to your marketing list.
I can almost guarantee that you don’t have an opt-in form or content upgrade for your old blog posts. Am I right?
If you do, how is that converting for you? Why not change it up to see if you can do better?
Your task as a business blogger is to get sales and leads. Period. That’s why you’re spending your time and money on content marketing.
The benefits of adding and testing opt-ins:
- more prospects opting into your marketing list (or call or webinar or etc.)
- qualifying leads
- converting leads into sales
How Can a Blog Content Refresh Increase Income?
Okay, you’ve probably followed me so far but doubt that updating a few old blog posts can increase income, am I right?
As a business blogger, every piece of content (blog, social, email, image, etc.) serves a purpose. For you, sales are your top concern. So, ask yourself, does this blog post serve its function and if not, how can I upgrade it?
Not every post on your blog needs to convert to a sale. But, you do need to think about your sales cycle.
For example, this post is part of a new service I’m adding – Blog Content Refresh. It educates but also promotes the free training on the 26th of September. When you sign up for the training, you’ll see a one-time-offer for the companion e-book.
You can choose to buy this which will notify my marketing team that you’re interested in this service.
You can also opt out and never see the offer again. This notifies my community nurturing team.
Depending on your choice, you’ll receive a set of educational emails customized to your interests (or non-interest).
Can you see how this will help your business increase its income? I hope so. It’s kind of exciting, isn’t it?As a business blogger, every piece of content serves a purpose. Is yours working? #blogcontentClick To Tweet
A blog content refresh or content audit can help your content work better. You can increase traffic, subscribers, social shares, and even income. Identifying the content on your business blog that works, helps you with consistent leads and sales. That’s a good thing, right?
Before you go, I want to invite you (or your virtual assistant) to attend the free training on September 26, 2017. A replay will be available for 24-hours but only if you register. Hope to see you there and please if you know someone who would be interested in learning about updating old blog posts, share this post.
P.S. Don’t forget to leave a comment below for a chance to get one old post refreshed by ME ($40 value). In the future, my son will handle most of these so now is the time to secure my assistance.
